"Today, all of us do, by our presence here and by our celebrations in other parts of our country and the world, confer glory and hope to newborn liberty."
In April 1994, the world witnessed a historic event as ALL South Africans voted in their first-ever free elections. This event ended 340 years of minority-imposed government and brought Nelson Mandela to power as President of the new Republic of South Africa. During a White House Ceremony, President Mandela gave special recognition to us for our role in bringing democracy to South Africa. "You have no idea how your involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle in our country actually helped to facilitate the transformation."
